Advancing knowledge on climate change impacts through inter-university cooperation: the Maldives at the forefront of research

In the framework of the Erasmus+ project CHILDRN, supported by the European Commission,  Maldives National University organized an international Research Workshop in Malé from 26th February to 28th February 2023. The objective of this three-day Research Workshop was to bring together European researchers and Maldivian experts (academics, but also civil servants and practitioners) in order to initiate joint research about the impact of climate change in the Maldives.  

Themes selected for these exchanges and the Maldivian and European researchers associated: 

1. The artificial island of Hulhumale:  Prof. François Gemenne, University of Liege and Mr. Mohamed Nasheed, Speaker of The People’s Majilis 2023 (Maldivian Parliament)

2. Coastal erosion: Pierre Ozer, University of Liege and Ahmed Aslam, Maldives National University

3. Public health in Loss & Damage & Awareness of climate change: Prof. Anneliese Depoux, Université Paris Cité and Dr. Zeeniya Hassan Kamil, Maldives National University

4. Conducting climate change and health research, generating data, analyzing retrospective data, and promoting capacity building through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to enhance climate change and health education: Dr. Sandra Barteit, Heidelberg University.

5. Climate change related migration and health in Small Island States: Dr. Patricia Nayna Schwerdtle (HIGH)

6. Climate-resilient and sustainable health systems: Dr. Patricia Nayna Schwerdtle (HIGH)

7. Perceptions of the government engagement-Growth over climate: last WVS evidence from Maldives : Dr. Paula Puskarova, University of Economics in Bratislava 

8. Biodiversity Adaptation: Prof. Mikulas Cernota, University of Economics in Bratislava & Ms. Aminath Shazly, Maldives National University

43 people participated, 14 of them from Europe, 29 from the Maldives. Among them are  3 European students who stayed 2 or 3 months on site. One of them was finishing his master in Sciences and Environment Management at the University of Liège. Participants appreciated the opportunity to discuss their research in small groups during the 3 days. The exchanges were fruitful and will no doubt continue online in the coming months, leading to joint publications.

Dans le cadre du projet Erasmus + CHILDRN, soutenu par la Commission européenne , un séminaire de recherche international a été  organisé à Malé par l'Université nationale des Maldives . L'objectif de cette rencontre scientifique de trois jours (26-28 février 2023) était de réunir des chercheurs européens et des experts maldiviens (universitaires, mais aussi fonctionnaires et praticiens) afin d'initier des recherches conjointes sur l'impact du changement climatique aux Maldives.  

Voici les thèmes retenus pour ces échanges et les chercheurs maldiviens et européens associés:

- l'île artificielle de Hulhumale :  François Gemenne, Université de Liège et Mohamed Nasheed, président du Majilis, Parlement  du people maldivien

- Érosion côtière : Pierre Ozer, Université de Liège et Ahmed Aslam, Université nationale des Maldives

- Santé publique en matière de pertes et dommages et sensibilisation au changement climatique :

 Anneliese Depoux, Université Paris Cité et Zeeniya Hassan Kamil, Université nationale des Maldives

- Perceptions de l'engagement du gouvernement : Paula Puskarova, Université d'économie de Bratislava 

- Adaptation de la biodiversité : Mikulas Cernota, Université d'économie de Bratislava et Aminath Shazly, Université nationale des Maldives

43 personnes ont participé au workshop, dont 14 en provenance d'Europe et 29 des Maldives. Parmi les participants, 3 étudiant.es. européen.ne.s, qui resteront 2 ou 3 mois sur place. L'un d'entre eux termine son master en sciences et gestion de l'environnement à l'Université de Liège. 

Les participants ont apprécié de pouvoir discuter de leurs recherches en petits groupes pendant 2 jours. Les échanges ont été fructueux et se poursuivront sans nul doute en ligne dans les mois à venir, pour donner lieu à des publications conjointes. 

Les étudiants de l'université des Maldives ont assisté à deux conférences, l'une donnée par le Pr. Mikulas Cernota : Points de rupture environnementaux et l’autre par le Pr.Rainer Sauerborn, de l'université de Heidelberg : Les impacts du changement climatique sur la santé publique dans les petits États insulaires.
